Under Pressure Benchmark for DDBMS Availability

چکیده
The availability of Distributed Database Management Systems (DDBMS) is related to the probability of being up and running at a given point in time and to the management of failures. One well-known and widely used mechanism to ensure availability is replication, which includes performance impact on maintaining data replicas across the DDBMS’s machine nodes. Benchmarking can be used to measure such impact. In this article, we present a benchmark that evaluates the performance of DDBMS, considering availability through replication, called Under Pressure Benchmark (UPB). The UPB measures performance with different degrees of replication upon a high-throughput distributed workload, combined with failures. The UPB methodology increases the evaluation complexity from a stable system scenario to a complex one with different load sizes and replicas. We validate our benchmark with three high-throughput in-memory DDBMS: VoltDB, NuoDB and Dbms-X.

Distributed systems are vital for the efficient processing required in military applications. For these applications it is especially important that the distributed database management systems (DDBMS) should operate in a secure manner. For example, the DDBMS should allow users, who are cleared to different levels, access to the database consisting of data at a variety of sensitivity levels with...

DBMS as an I/O-intensive software has been focused on how to efficiently make use of cache, main memory, and disk storage based on the observation of their bandwidths in the memory hierarchy. In the past decade, Distributed Database Management Systems (DDBMS) has introduced computer network as another kind of data I/O media. Traditionally, computer networks were put on a lower layer than disk s...

Majority of the research in multilevel secure database management systems (MLS/DBMS) focuses primarily on centralized database systems. However, with the demand for higher performance and higher availability, database systems have moved from centralized to distributed architectures, and the research in multilevel secure distributed database management systems (MLS/DDBMS) is gaining more and mor...
متن کاملHeterogeneity in the Distributed Database Management System SIRIUS-DELTA
In this paper, we first define the characteristics of a heterogeneous DDBMS (section 1). Then we present the heterogeneous DDBMS we are implementing. This prototype relies on the SIRIUS-DELTA homogeneous DDBMS and two local DBMSs : MRDS (running on a very large computer) and PHLOX (a DBMS for micro-computers). The basis of the system is a pivot system concept (section 2). The description of the...
